一張台製薄膜 掀肯亞手機銀行大戰

「即便是小公司,也該有全球格局」,太思董座擲地有聲的話,讓這張只有保鮮膜厚的卡,跨進全球二十多國、布滿專利。

一張來自台灣的SIM卡,竟然挑起非洲金融、電信業大戰。

今年,非洲肯亞最受注目的新聞是,由肯亞第一大電信商Safaricom成立,囊括該國逾七成市占率的行動支付業者M-Pesa終於出現對手。

對手,便是肯亞第一大銀行Equity Bank

今年底,Equity Bank最快將推出一款特殊的薄膜卡,只要貼在手機原本SIM卡上,就能取代金融卡,進行轉帳、付款等功能,搖身一變成為行動銀行,「非洲行動支付大戰即將開打。」《華爾街日報》(The Wall Street Journal)對此評論。

但很少人注意到,挑起這場肯亞電信、金融巨擘戰火的薄膜卡,其實來自台灣的太思科技。

「台灣即便是小公司、新創企業,也應該有全球的規模跟格局。」太思科技董事長何俊炘說。

 

拚專利拚良率

新手機上市,要檢測上百項

走進太思總公司辦公室,映入眼簾的,是一張世界地圖,從中國、日本、韓國,到土耳其、俄羅斯、挪威……,甚至墨西哥、南非等新興市場,全球二十幾國,橫跨五大洲,布滿各種專利。清楚告訴訪客,放眼全世界,都是其市場。

這張太思研發、製造的薄膜卡,厚度只比保鮮膜厚一些,上頭有十四個專利。有了它,偏鄉的消費者即便找不到提款機,也能解決交易問題,過去七年,太思在中國發卡量超過千萬張。

手機變錢包,是現在的最新趨勢,但是十年前,何俊炘就在業界之先,第一個研發出薄膜卡技術,打破電信商和銀行隔閡。

創辦太思之前,他在國際SIM卡大廠有近十年經歷,有次開車上山,路上車子沒油,想加油卻發現忘記帶錢包,只帶手機出門,「如果手機可以當錢包用,就沒問題了。」何俊炘說。自此才有開發薄膜卡的念頭。

但是,SIM卡就像手機的身分證,保障使用者隱私,也開通上網、通話功能,儲存部分資料,要在手機SIM卡上,黏上一張薄膜卡,打通電信、金融服務,最重要的,則是良率和相容性。

為了避免感應不良,或薄膜卡卡在手機裡……,太思研發團隊花了快四年,反覆調整材料與封裝工序,才能完全服貼在SIM卡上,不會因為擠壓而脫落。另外,得顧及不同品牌手機相容性,只要市面上推出一款新手機,上百項檢測項目必須一一重測,良率才達到九成以上。

太思在中國的代理商、上海方付通董事長孫宏宇表示,中國做薄膜卡的業者也不少,但品質良莠不齊,「根本沒人敢用。」只有太思憑技術站穩市場,如中國郵政儲蓄銀行、農業銀行等一千多家業者都是其客戶。

 

目標新興市場

未跑先碰壁,靠技術解疑慮

不過,雖然太思早一步推出服務,但行動支付應用日益多元,在中國,阿里巴巴集團的支付寶只要綁定銀行帳戶,手機也能轉帳、付款,連拿出SIM卡、貼上薄膜卡動作都省略,因此成為主流,目前實名用戶數已經超過四億。

太思的薄膜卡技術應用,必須往金融體制不成熟的新興市場走。因為它的優勢在於連銀行帳戶都沒有的消費者,只要在SIM卡上貼上它,手機就能變成窮人的行動銀行,扮演帳戶角色。或者,像肯亞幅員廣大,每個人平均得走五公里才能找到一台提款機,薄膜卡大大解決轉帳不便問題。

但如何打入政商關係緊密的新興國家,才是最大難關。

去年初,肯亞第一大銀行Equity Bank和太思聯手,誓言改變M-Pesa壟斷地位。沒想到,因為有第一大電信商Safaricom撐腰,M-Pesa一狀告上政府,懷疑一旦加裝薄膜卡,恐竊取手機用戶資料,要求立法禁止銀行發行薄膜卡。

產品還沒上市就碰壁,以肯亞政府辦事效率,若走法律程序,拖兩、三年時有所聞,「每天我都是看當地頭條報紙才知道這個project(計畫)進度。」何俊炘直言。

半年多過去,還是沒有具體進展。最後,肯亞政府只好找所有電信商、銀行,以及全球行動通訊系統協會(GSMA)開聽證會。現場,各方拋出種種問題,例如薄膜卡「會不會偷用戶的錢?」「會不會有病毒?」等。何俊炘從技術、應用面一一講解,化解疑慮。直到肯亞總統表態支持自由競爭,才幫太思打開市場大門。

到新興市場發展,往往得耗費心神處理政治、法律問題,太思為何堅持往外走?

何俊炘談起一段工作經歷。當時,他在電話卡大廠擔任工程師,雖然公司賺錢,卻錯過轉型時機,手機興起,只能等著被淘汰。這讓他意識到,唯有一直走在前端,才無後顧之憂,「當發現(市場)改變,往往無力回天了。」

「你有注意到他們水族箱裡養的是什麼魚嗎?是鯊魚。鯊魚活在海水裡,不是淡水,而且二十四小時不休息,拚命游……。」中華電信行動通信分公司總經理林國豐有次與何俊炘碰面、談合作,對辦公室裡的鯊魚印象深刻。

太思就像一隻鯊魚,游走在不同海域,不願困在台灣這個小池塘裡。也告訴其他台灣企業,不管經濟好壞都要有跨出去的勇氣,否則遲早喪失求生本領。
